Holy Crap!

What would Houston be today without good ‘ol Enron Field? Today we see corporate logos on buildings, at sporting events, in museums, in the theater, at the symphony, at festivals even at the library. This growing trend has many asking if we are going too far. Are we trading our community culture for a corporate culture in order to pay the bills? And, is there a better way? Maybe it’s okay for commercial venues but what about in the nonprofit and cultural sector? If a cause is important shouldn’t companies donate money to help without having their logo splashed everywhere? Holy Crap!, which is part performance part exhibition explores these questions and examines the limits to which we are willing to lease visibility to companies with a brand to sell. This event promises to be loud, shocking, fun and above all, thought provoking.

“If it doesn't shock you, something is wrong! The most difficult challenge about this exhibit is getting people past their initial shock to the understanding that this is where America is heading with corporate sponsorship. Currently, we are losing our sense of culture, tradition and ultimately our identity. This installation is meant to start a dialog." -- Rebecca Davis
Services begin at 7:00PM on February 7 in the lightwell of the University of North Texas Fine Arts Building in Denton. Wine, wafers and enlightenment will be offered. For more information, visit http://www.pixelpushersdesign.com/hc/invitation.html

Foundations: Who will you be choosing to design your annual report?

Every foundation in the country produces an annual report. And almost all of them hire someone to design it. So, one of our first goals in 2005 is to make sure that at least 500 of those foundations hire a Design American to do it. How do we do this? We are working with talent placement companies in every major (and not so major) market in the country to assist us in managing talent. Design America candidates are thoroughly screened, their portfolios are reviewed, credentials are verified and each candidate is personally interviewed. We all want to make sure that when foundations consider hiring a Design American they get the very best candidate for their job – from young guns right out of college to the most seasoned professionals. Our supporters with these placing firms become an extension of your communications team ensuring that projects are completed on time, on budget and on target.

"We are going first-class on this from start to finish. When we meet our goal we will be able to facilitate donated creative services with an estimated commercial value (at the very least) of $750,000. In addition, we will reinvest $125,000 in Design America produced projects like the “When I Get Home” public service campaign, which helps recruit mentors, foster families and adoptive families for teenage victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment. And on top of all this we will donate an additional $50,000 in cash to assist collaborations with their outreach efforts. This is all amazing! And it starts simply with foundations deciding who will design their annual reports. I would certainly love to help them make this decision!"

Calculating the greater good

From Graphic Design USA: When you specify recycled paper, you know you are doing good. But, how much good? Mohawk Paper's online Environmental Calculator precisely calculates the positive impact of a particular specification of the mill's environmentally-friendly Options grade.

"What's exciting about this tool is that now designers can literally show their clients how the thoughtful selection of paper eliminates unnecessary atmospheric emissions, reduces the amount of solid waste generated and minimizes the impact on our forests."

Preserving an historic home for the arts in Texas

Two creative directors in Dallas, Texas are working with the Design America Foundation to develop the first-ever house design team for the Sammons Center for the Arts. Located in the historic Turtle Creek Pump Station, the Sammons Center for the Arts is the oldest and largest arts incubator in the country and home to some of the most important small performing arts groups in the area. This partnership will help raise money to maintain the Pump Station and also assist the arts groups with their outreach activities.

"The creative community is uniquely positioned to support our colleagues in the nonprofit arts sector not only by creating awareness but also by helping generate revenue. Our efforts with the Sammons Center will be a model for other nonprofit incubators. We will not only be supporting the artists and their work but, we will also be helping to preserve a historic building."
